‘யார் துறவி? எது துறவு?’ என்கிற கேள்விக்கு இலக்கணமாக, பெரியவர் திகழ்ந்த ஒரு அரிய சம்பவம் ...

பெரியவர் அறுபது வயதை தொட்டிருந்த சமயம். பக்தர்கள் அவருக்கு தங்க கிரீடம் சூட்டி கௌரவிக்க எண்ணினார்கள்.

ஆந்திர மாநிலம், விஜய வாடாவில் பெரியவரின் இந்த வைபவத்தை ஒட்டி ஒரு தங்க கீரீடமும், இரண்டு லட்ச ரூபாய் காணிக்கையும் வழங்க தீர்மானித்திருந்தனர்.

இதுபற்றிய தகவல் பெரியவரை அணுகவுமே, அதற்கான வசூலை தடுத்துவிட்டார் பெரியவர். அவ்வேளையில் அவர் சொன்னதுதான் "யார் துறவி – எது துறவு" என்பதற்கு இலக்கணம்!

ஸ்தாபன பலம் என்று ஒன்று மிதமிஞ்சி ஏற்பட்டுவிட்டாலே, அதன் அதிபதியனாவன் ஆத்ம பலம் சம்பாதிக்க சிரமப்பட வேண்டியதில்லை என்னும் ஆபத்து ஏற்பட்டுவிடுகிறது. சன்னியாசி என்பவனை, ஒரு உடைமையுமில்லாத ஏகாங்கியாக, அவன் தன் ஊர் என்று சொல்லிக்கொள்வதற்குக்கூட, ஒரு இடம் இருக்க வேண்டாமென்று, சதா ஊர்ஊராக சஞ்சாரம் பண்ணும்படிதான் சாஸ்திரம் கூறியுள்ளது.

இருந்தும், சமூகத்துக்கு வழிகாட்ட ஒரு அமைப்பு தேவைப்பட்டு அதுதான் மடம் என்றானது. இதை ஒரு தவிர்க்க முடியாத தீமை (Necessary evil) என்றுதான் கூற வேண்டும்.தவிர்க்க முடியாத இந்தத் தீமையை நன்மையாக மாற்றிக்காட்டும் கடமையே சன்னியாசியின் கடமை. இந்தக் கடமையின் போது, அவனது ஆன்ம தபோ பலத்தைவிட, பணத்தின் பலம் பெரிதாகி விடாமல் அவன் பார்த்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.காஞ்சிமடம் அவசியச் செலவுக்கே கஷ்டப்பட்ட காலம் உண்டு. ஆனால் சந்திரமௌலீஸ்வரர் கருணையாலே அந்த கஷ்டம் நீங்கியது. இந்த மாதிரி கஷ்டங்களை ஈஸ்வர சோதனையாகவே கருதினேன். உத்தமமா பார்த்துக்கொள்வது அவன்தான்; பணமல்ல.எனவே, எப்போதும் Nil Balanceலேயே மடம் இருக்கும்படி ஜாக்ரதையாக நிர்வகித்து வருகிறேன். இன்று இரண்டு லட்சம் என்று சர்ப்ளஸ்ஸில் போகப் பார்த்தது. இதற்கு ‘ப்ளஸ்’ கூடாது என்று கருதுகிறேன். ஸ்வாமிவாரு தடுத்து விட்டாரே என வருத்தப்படவேண்டாம். பணத்தை வாங்கிக்கொண்டு, நான் பண்ணுவது ஆசீர்வாதமாக இருக்காது. அதற்காக பணமே வேண்டாம் என்று கூறவில்லை. நெருக்கடி ஏற்படும்போது, உங்களிடம்தான் பிட்சை கேட்டு நிற்பேன். தேவைக்குத்தான் பணம். சன்னியாசிக்கு பணத்தைவிட ஆத்மபலம்தான் பெரும் பணம்…!’

சரி! பிக்ஷை பண்ணறேன், நாளைக்கு என்ன? இப்பவே பண்றேன்

 

ஒருமுறை காசியிலிருந்து திரும்பும் வழியில் பெர்ஹாம்பூரில் சாதுர்மாஸ்ய வ்ரதம் அனுஷ்டிக்கும்போது நெடுநாட்கள் சுத்த உபவாசமிருந்தார் பெரியவா. அதையும்மடத்தினருக்கே தெரியாமல் ரொம்ப ரகசியமாக செய்தார். மடத்து கஜானாவை நிர்வகித்து வந்த ராமச்சந்திர ஐயருக்கு எப்படியோ ரகசியம் தெரிந்து விட்டது. பெரியவாளிடம்சென்று உபவாசத்தை விடுமாறு வேண்டினார்.

அவரும் உடனே பிக்ஷை தயாரித்து கொண்டிருந்த பணியாளரை கூப்பிட்டு, மறுதினம் தம் உணவில் இன்ன இன்ன சேர்க்கும்படி கூறினார். "கஜானா" சந்தோஷம் தாங்காமல்திரும்பினார். திரும்பியபின் அவருக்கு சந்தேகம் எழுந்தது. "ஆனானப்பட்ட அன்னதான சிவன் போன்றவர்களின் வேண்டுகோளுக்கும் மசியாத பெரியவாளா நம்கோரிக்கைக்கு இத்தனை சுலபமாக மசிந்து விட்டார்?" என்ற சந்தேகம். பிக்ஷை தயாரிக்கும் பாரிஷதரிடம் போய் குடைந்தார். அவருடைய சந்தேகம் சரியானதே என்றுநிரூபணமாயிற்று.

"நீங்க அந்தண்டை போனதுமே பெரியவா, "அவர் மனசு சமாதானமாறதுகக்காகத்தான் அப்படி சொன்னேன். அதை அடியோட மறந்துடு"ன்னார்" என்று அந்த பாரிஷதர் நிஜத்தைகக்கி விட்டார்.

"கஜானா" மறுபடி பெரியவாளிடம் போனார். பல முறை போனார். அனால் அவர் வாயை திறக்கவே பெரியவா இடம் கொடுக்காமல் அடியார்கள், சிப்பந்திகள், பண்டிதர்கள்என்று எவரையேனும் சுற்றிலும் வைத்து கொண்டு ரொம்பவும் சீரியசாக ஏதாவது அலசி கொண்டிருந்தார். இப்படி பல நாட்கள் ஓடின. கடும் உபவாசமும் தொடர்ந்தது.கடைசியாக ஒருநாள் இரவு 10 மணிக்கு மேல் "கஜானா"விடம் பெரியவா பிடிபட்டார். சுக்ரவார பூஜை சற்று தள்ளாட்டத்துடனேயே முடித்துவிட்டு, ஓய்வுக்கு பெரியவாசாய்ந்த சமயத்தில் கஜானா அவரை பிடித்து விட்டார்.

"நாளைக்கு பெரியவா வயிறார பிக்ஷை பண்ணலேன்னா நான் மடத்தை விட்டே போய்டறேன்" என்று முரண்டு செய்து பார்த்தார் கஜானா.

அதுவும் பலிக்கவில்லை. முகமெல்லாம் சிரிப்பாக பெரியவா "நீ இல்லாட்டா மடம் நடக்காதோ?" என்றார்.

"அப்போ இந்த லோகத்தை விட்டே போய்டறேன்" என்று தம்மை மீறிய ஆவேசத்துடன் சொல்லி அழுதே விட்டார் கஜானா.

"சரி! பிக்ஷை பண்ணறேன். நாளைக்கு என்ன? இப்பவே பண்றேன். வயிறார பண்ணனும்னியே பண்றேன், பண்ணி வைக்கறையா?" என்றார் பெரியவா.

"காத்துண்டு இருக்கேன்" என்று கஜானா நமஸ்காரம் செய்தார். அந்த இரவு வேளையில் பெரியவா பாலும் பழமும் தவிர எதுவும் உட்க்கொள்ளமாட்டார் என்று நினைத்தார்.பெரியவா உட்கொள்ளும் அளவு தெரிந்த பிக்ஷை பாரிஷதரை கூப்பிட்டார்.

"அவனை ஏன் கூப்பிடறே? ஒன்னையேதானே பிக்ஷை பண்ணி வெக்க சொன்னேன்? நீயும் ஒப்புத்துண்டையே!"

"அளவு தெரியாததால அவனை கேட்டுக்கலாம்னு....." கஜானா இழுத்தார்.

"அளவு தெரியாட்டா என்ன? இருக்கறதை ஜாடா கொண்டா"

"சரி நாம் பழக்கூடைகள், தட்டுகள் யாவும் கொண்டு வந்து வைப்போம். பெரியவாளே வேண்டியதை எடுத்து கொள்ளட்டும்" என்று கஜானா நினைத்து அவ்வாறே செய்தார்.

அதியாச்சரியமான கட்டளை பெரியவாளிடமிருந்து பிறந்தது "சுக்ரவார நைவேத்யம் சொஜ்ஜி, சுண்டல் எங்கே? கொண்டா சட்னு"!

கஜான ஓடோடிப்போய் பெரிய பெரிய பாத்திரங்களில் நிறையவே இருந்த சொஜ்ஜியையும், சுண்டலையும் சமர்ப்பித்தார்.

அதற்கும் மேற்பட்ட ஆச்சரியம் நிகழ்ந்தது. பெரியவா அவ்வளவையும் வெகு விரைவில் உட்கொண்டு பாத்திரங்களை காலி செய்தார். "இவ்வளவுதானா?" என்று வேறுகேட்டார்.

பன்னிரண்டு திருவோணம் அட்டேன் பண்டும் இப்பிள்ளை பரிசறிவன்*
"இன்ன முகப்பன் நானென்று சொல்லி" எல்லாம் விழுங்கிட்டுப் போந்து நின்றான்*............என்று ஆய்ச்சி மொழியாக ஆழ்வார் பாடியது [9-வது திருமொழி - வெண்ணெய்விழுங்கி-7] உண்மையாயிற்று.

பழக்கூடையும் சடுதியில் காலியாயிற்று "இன்னும் என்ன இருக்கு" என்று கேள்வி!

கஜானா வெலவெலத்து போனார்.

"வயிறார பண்ணறேன்னு ஒப்புத்துண்டு பசியை கிளறிட்டியே! உசிர் போறதே!" என்ற பெரியவாளின் வார்த்தையை தாங்காமல் ஒரு பெரிய கூஜா பாலை திருமுன் வைத்தார்.கடகடவென்று அதையும் பெரியவா காலி பண்ண, தடதடவென கஜானா கன்னத்தில் போட்டுகொண்டு அவரது பாதத்தில் தடாலென விழுந்தார்.

"பெரியவா க்ஷமிக்கணும். இனிமே ஒருநாளும் பெரியவாளை தொந்திரவு பண்ண மாட்டேன்" என்று விக்கினார்.

குழந்தையாக சிரித்த பெரியவா, "இனிமே என் வம்புக்கு வரமாட்டியோல்யோ?" என்று கை தூக்கி ஆசிர்வதித்தார்.

The Wish Fulfilled

காஞ்சிமடத்தில் பெரியவரின் மீது பக்தியும் பாசமும் கொண்ட அம்மையார்
ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் தான் எசையனூர் பாட்டி. இவ்வூர் விழுப்புரம்
மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ளது. அவரது பெயர் கோகிலாம்பாள்.

இளமையிலேயே கணவர் மற்றும் குழந்தைகளை இழந்துவிட்டதால், காஞ்சிமடத்தில்
தொண்டு செய்வதை தன் வாழ்நாள் லட்சியமாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு அங்கேயே ஐக்கியமாகி
விட்டார்.

எசையனூர் பாட்டிக்கு மடத்தில் தனி மதிப்பு உண்டு. மடத்து
சிப்பந்திகளையும் அரட்டி உருட்டி வேலை வாங்குவார். அதேநேரம், அன்பாகவும்
நடந்து கொள்வார். அவருடைய அணுகுமுறையில் வேலை செய்யாதவனும் செய்யத்
தொடங்கிவிடுவான்.

“ஏண்டா ராமமூர்த்தி! இன்னிக்கு பெரியவா பிøக்ஷயை சரியா பண்ணினாரா? ஏன்
தான் ஏகாதசி, துவாதசி, பிரதோஷம் எல்லாம் சேர்ந்தாப்பில வரதோ? தெரியலையே!
தசமி வந்தாலே இப்படி நாலு நாள் பட்டினியா காயிறாரே! உடம்பு என்னாகும்?”
என்று கவலை கொள்வார் பாட்டி.

“”வேலூர் மாமா! நான் சொல்றதைக் கேளுங்கோ! நீங்க சொன்னாத் தான் பெரியவா
கேட்பா! உடம்புக்கு முடியாத நேரத்தில வெந்நீர் ஸ்நானம் செய்யச்
சொல்லுங்கோ!” என்பார்.

“”ஏண்டா! விஸ்வநாதா! பெரியவாளைத் தூங்கவிடாம பேச்சுக் கொடுத்துண்டே
இருக்கே!” என்று அதட்டுவார். இப்படி நாள் முழுவதும் எசையனூர் பாட்டியின்
அக்கறையுணர்வு அவ்வப்போது வெளிப்பட்டுக் கொண்டே இருக்கும். திடீரென்று
பெரியவரைத் தூக்கிச் செல்லும் சவாரிக்காரர்களிடம் போய், “”நீங்கள்
எல்லாரும் புண்ணிய ஆத்மாக்கள். நன்னா இருங்கோ! இதில் இருக்கும்
பட்சணங்களை எடுத்து பகிர்ந்து சாப்பிடுங்கோ!” என்று அன்போடு உபசரிப்பார்.


காலப்போக்கில், பாட்டி தள்ளாமையில் தவித்துவந்தார். அடிக்கடி பெரியவரிடம்
பிரார்த்தனை செய்து கொள்வார். “”பொன்னோ பொருளோ தேவையில்லை. வாழ்க்கையில்
என்னால் முடிந்த சேவைகளைச் செய்தேன். இப்போ நிம்மதியான முடிவை மட்டும்
உங்களிடம் வேண்டறேன்,” என்று பாட்டி வருந்தினார்.

பெரியவரும் பாட்டியின் உடல்நலனை அவ்வப்போது சிஷ்யர்களிடம் கேட்டுத்
தெரிந்து கொள்வார்.

ஒருநாள் பெரியவர் திடீரென்று தன் மடத்து தொண்டர் ஒருவரை அழைத்தார்.

“”எசையனூர் பாட்டிக்கு இந்த துளசி தீர்த்த பிரசாதத்தைக் கொடு, ” என்று
கட்டளையிட்டார். அதுவே பாட்டியின் கடைசி உணவாக இருந்தது.

சிறிது நேரத்தில் எசையனூர் பாட்டி இறைவனடி சேர்ந்துவிட்டார். எந்தவித மரண
அவஸ்தையோ, நோயோ இல்லாமல் பாட்டி மறைந்தது ஆச்சரியமாக இருந்தது. மறைவுச்
செய்தி கேட்ட பெரியவர் மூன்று தினங்கள் மவுனவிரதம் இருந்தார். பாட்டி
கேட்டபடியே, நிம்மதியான இறுதி முடிவைத் தந்தது பெரியவரின் ஆசி என்பதை
மடத்து தொண்டர்கள் அனைவரும் உணர்ந்தனர்.

What the World Seeks!

Once God looked at the earth. He saw so many beings slogging day in and day out, living in distress throughout their lives. His heart melted in compassion. He thought, ‘I should grant liberation to all these poor beings..’. He then descended down to earth.

He went to one of the streets in a village where He saw an emaciated dog. The dog was afflicted by diseases; it had lost one of its legs and eyes and its tail was partly cut off. He felt sorry for the dog and thought he should grant liberation to the poor soul and thus relieve it from its current pathetic plight. He approached the dog and requested that it come along with Him to His empire. The dog looked at Him and said, ‘Well! I do understand you wish to grant me liberation. But do you know my state? I have established my power in this street by fighting the dogs from the next street and driving them away. I now rule this territory! If I come along with you, the dog in the neighboring street will take over my territory! How can I let this happen?’

God was shocked and stunned to listen to the dog. The blind, handicapped, rabid dog that had even lost its tail wanted to live on and not attain liberation!

Next He went to a pig that was wallowing in filth and presented his offer to it. The pig smiled at God and said, ‘Sir! You simply don’t understand the luxury of wallowing in filth, and hence you are talking about paltry things like liberation! I am sorry, I can’t forsake this joy!’

Disappointed, God saw a gigantic elephant was carrying a heavy load of lumber uphill. He noticed it happily swaying its huge ears as it walked by, even though its legs were chained and his mahout was prodding its leg with his sharp spear. The plight of the elephant would melt the heart of the cruelest person!

God approached the tusker and granted His offer of liberation. The elephant said ‘I am waiting for the right time to take my revenge on this puny fellow who keeps prodding me with his stick! How can I waste this entire life of mine by coming with you and not fulfilling that desire of mine? Tortured I may be, but I am sorry, I cannot accept liberation!’

God thought that the village was not the right place and so moved to a forest nearby. He spotted a deer that was wandering in the lush grass meadow. He approached the deer and before He could speak to the deer, it bolted away!

When he approached a lion, the lion came pouncing on God Himself!

Then God realized that all the living beings like to talk or listen about liberation, but in reality none of them truly wanted to attain it!

All for a single piece of loin-cloth

 

A SADHU under the instruction of his Guru built for himself a small shed, thatched with leaves at a distance from the haunts of men. He began his devotional exercises in this hut. Now, every morning after ablution he would hang his wet cloth and the kaupina (loin-cloth) on a tree close to the hut, to dry them. One day on his return from the neighbouring village, which he would visit to beg for his daily food, he found that the rats had cut holes in his kaupina. So the next day he was obliged to go to the village for a fresh one.A few days later, the sadhu spread his loin-cloth on the roof of his hut to dry it and then went to the village to beg as usual. On his return he found that the rats had torn it into shreds. He felt much annoyed and thought within himself "Where shall I go again to beg for a rag? Whom shall I ask for one?" All the same he saw the villagers the next day and re-presented to them the mischief done by the rats. Having heard all he had to say, the villagers said, "Who will keep you supplied with cloth every day? Just do one thing—keep a cat; it will keep away the rats." The sadhu forthwith secured a kitten in the village and carried it to his hut. From that day the rats ceased to trouble him and there was no end to his joy. The sadhu now began to tend the useful little creature with great care and feed it on the milk begged from the village. After some days, a villager said to him: "Sadhuji, you require milk every day; you can supply your want for a few days at most by begging; who will supply you with milk all the year round? Just do one thing—keep a cow. You can satisfy your own creature comforts by drinking its milk and you can also give some to your cat." In a few days the sadhu procured a milch cow and had no occasion to beg for milk any more.

By and by, the sadhu found it necessary to beg for straw for his cow. He had to visit the neighbouring villages for the purpose, but the villagers said, "There are lots of uncultivated lands close to your hut; just cultivate the land and you shall not have to beg for straw for your cow." Guided by their advice, the sadhu took to tilling the land. Gradually he had to engage some labourers and later on found it necessary to build barns to store the crop in. Thus he became, in course of time, a sort of landlord.
And, at last he had to take a wife to look after his big household. He now passed his days just like a busy householder. After some time, his Guru came to see him. Finding himself surrounded by goods and chattles, the Guru felt puzzled and enquired of a servant, "An ascetic used to live here in a hut; can you tell me where he has removed himself?" The servant did not know what to say in reply. So the Guru ventured to enter into the house, where he met his disciple. The Guru said to him, "My son, what is all this?" The disciple, in great shame fell at the feet of his Guru and said, "My Lord, all for a single piece of loin-cloth!"
